URGENT - ACTION REQUIRED: Passkey Activation
IMPORTANT: ACTION REQUIRED - Please Set Up Your New Login Security
Why are we asking you to do this?
Hong Kong's financial regulator, (Securities and Futures Commission or SFC), now requires all brokers, including Interactive Brokers, to use a stronger, safer way for you to log into your account. This is to better protect you from scammers and hackers.
What is a "Passkey"?
Right now, when you log in, you likely enter your username, password and then a code (sent by text or from an app). This second step is what's called two factor authentication or "2FA."
A Passkey replaces that entire process with something much simpler and safer: verifying that the login is from a device that you have previously defined as trusted. This device is usually already protected by your fingerprint, your face, or your device's screen lock. There's no code to type in and nothing for a scammer to steal or trick you into giving away. It's faster for you and much harder for criminals to break into your account.
What do you need to do?
Set up your Passkey now. It only takes a couple of minutes. You can do this one of two ways:
- Log into the IBKR Client Portal, go to the Security section, and follow the steps to add a Passkey.
- Simply log in as usual. When you do, a pop-up window will appear on the app or website walking you through it.
We've also included a short video showing exactly how to do it.
What happens if you don't set it up?
We are required by the HK regulators to limit access to accounts that haven't switched to a Passkey. If you don't complete this step, your account will be restricted to closing only transactions and certain restrictions on banking activity:
- You will still be able to: sell investments you already own.
- You will not be able to: buy new investments and may be limited on certain asset transfer requests.
We've also included a short video showing exactly how to do it.
Bottom line: This takes just a few minutes and helps keep your account safer. Please set it up today.
How to Log In Using Your Passkey
Logging in with a Passkey is quick and easy. Here's what it looks like:
Step 1: Enter your username and password, just like you always have.
Step 2: If you're asked to choose a login method, select Passkey.
Step 3: Confirm it's you: using your fingerprint, face, or however you normally unlock your phone or device.
That's it - you're in!

A couple of helpful tips:
- Haven't set up your Passkey yet?
No problem — visit the Activating a Passkey page for simple step-by-step instructions. - Logging in from a computer?
Make sure Bluetooth is activated on both your computer and your phone (the phone is usually where your Passkey is stored). This allows the two devices to talk to each other and confirm it's really you. Instructions for turning on Bluetooth are also on the Activating a Passkey page.
